The story of the disabled 2015
This documentary-series is the story of how we, as a society, look at the retarded / handicapped and how they have looked at us, throughout history. In 3 episodes we go on a journey to explore the history of the retarded and how their rights have changed.
From when superstition was common sense and it was believed that the devil or evil spirits possessed the body of the retarded. To decades later, where all handicapped and retarded were categorized in one group – even people with minor handicaps.
Today we use the more appropriate word ‘disabled’, but have the rights kept up with how society perceive the disabled? For instance, what is a disabled person allowed to do that a ‘normal’ isn’t and vice versa?
Through interviews with disabled people who have experienced the conditions and the years, when the doctor was the one in charge of everything – up until today where conditions and the individual are key words.
